Nowadays, the VW Golf is the technological marvel of its class, the first compact with a dual-clutch, the first to adopt all-turbo engine, all-wheel drive, scanners that read the road and all sorts of other goodies. But back in the days of the Golf 2, Volkswagen was a company struggling to make a name for itself, up against much bigger companies with vastly superior resources. The Golf 2 was basically just an improved version of the first model.
But of course there are some people out there who want to do crazy things to the Golf 2, crazy things like fitting it with DSG and 4Motion. Why? A Golf 2 can’t possibly benefit from more traction.

Well, this is 16Vampir, a car we’ve talked about before. It’s a road-going dragster powered by a 1.8-liter turbo engine. Running on 4.5 bars of pressure and ethanol, it puts down 1000 hp. The owner, a German tuner called Boba Motoring, says it’s the fastest Golf 2 in the world and we have no problem believing him. This highly volatile concoction explodes to 100 km/h in 2.3 seconds and does the quarter mile in 8.65s at 165 mph. (those are the new stats, not the ones in the older picture above)

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
