Once everybody's installed though, you'll all enjoy the soft, accommodating seats. Comparing the GL63
AMG to the G63 AMG, we find the first's seats as being even more comfortable. After all, the G-Class is a vehicle that's been adapted for civilian use...
Moving to the front, we find a dashboard that's largely similar to the in the Mercedes ML. While we would've liked a dedicated layout, this does bring benefits such as neat ergonomics.
There aren't many complains about the interior. Nevertheless, the average size of the
Comand infotainment system's display, 7 inches, does feel unpleasant, especially in such a large interior.
Let's not forget that this is the AMG incarnation of the GL though. The treatment fits in rather nicely. It's funny how well they've managed to mix the sporty bits with the nature of the vehicle.
We'd recommend opting for the Designo stuff, which brings more than what meets the eye on the spec sheet. For instance, the leather on the various surfaces isn't just smoother, the padding underneath also feels more generous.
And since we mentioned optional extras, we have to explain that the Mercedes GL comes with plenty of features. Despite not shocking you as some sort of gadgets show, the car has tons and tons of optional equipment.
We'll mention a few we wouldn't go without, starting with the audio area. Here, you can choose between two optional systems. The first is signed by
Harman Kardon while the latter comes from Bang & Olufsen. The price difference is anything but small but the Bang & Olufsen does stand out in terms of clarity.
The size of the thing simply asks for the 360-degree camera to be ordered. Parking a
GL63 AMG without this is a bit of an extreme sport.
As for the safety stuff, this ranges from the Distronic Plus active cruise control to the Active Lane Keeping Assist and the Blind Spot Assist.
We were dying to check out the luggage compartment ever since we started our drive, so we did. The standard value (in five-seat configuration) sits at 24 cubic feet (680 liters). Even with all seven seats in place the Mercedes GL still offers a decent 10.4 cubic feet (295 liters). And if you fold these, as well as the second row, you end up with no less than 81.2 cubic feet (2,300 liters). Audi Q7 and
Range Rover defeated.
