Mercedes' GL has grown in every dimension and yet its design is pleasant. Approaching our test car, we got the impression of looking at a guy that spends quite a lot of time in the gym.
This is true even without the
AMG body bits, but don't take these easily, as they do make for a nice overall effect. In addition to the obvious front and rear aprons, the AMG bodybuilding make the GL 0.9 inches (22 mm) wider. These accommodate 21-inch
AMG wheels, but the rims did bring mixed opinions within our office.
Of course, they do emphasize the stance, but their size also makes offloading perspectives a bit amusing. A pretty common situation in the segment though.
Mercedes' GL still rides on a modified version of the ML's platform. A monocoque setup then. However, the new generation is up to 198 lbs (90 kg) lighter, thanks to the use of aluminum. The joyful metal is featured in the wings and hood, as well as being used for the suspension.
Don't let yourself impressed by the aforementioned figure though, the Mercedes GL still tips the scales at about 5,950 lbs (2.7 tons). Heavier than a
Range Rover then.
We've just stepped onto the running boards to help ourselves inside the Mercedes GL. The previous generation wasn't exactly lacking cabin space, but the new model tops that. Just about every interior dimension of the GL is more generous and this is true for all three rows of seats. Since the cabin is so vast, we do recommend the double sunroof.
The cabin falls behind the prestige inspired by that of the Range Rover. As far as the interior is concerned, the Audi Q7 is a far closer competitor.
By the way, you won't have a problem if you have to use one of
the two seats in the third row. Yes, the Mercedes GL has kept its 2-3-2 seating arrangement. The third row can be raised or lowered at the touch of a button. Something to go with the soft-close doors.
Nonetheless, you do have to bring the second row of seats back up manually and this requires a bit of effort. Yep, that means you may have to play the patience game with your little ones, a children's favorite.
