The CLS63
AMG may have learned some new moves at the gym, but nothing’s changed on the outside. Many people still argue that this second-generation CLS doesn’t have the presence of the first one. However, we really like the way in which its roof line makes you think about state-of-the-art architectural projects.
And the V-shaped front fascia talks about going fast, even when it’s parked, especially in AMG guise. In fact, the whole AMG body treatment fits the four-door coupe like a glove - this sits somewhere halfway between a boxing glove and an elegant leather piece. Look at those muscles on the rear fender and you’ll see what we mean.
However, we have to go under the CLS63 AMG’s skin. The Germans have a special physics lesson for us.
In the US model (4Matic-only), the standard model now delivers 550
HP and 531 lb-ft (720 Nm) at a hilarious 1,750 rpm.
The new S-Model trim brings an extra 27 HP and 59 lb-ft (80 Nm) of torque. Among others, this comes thanks to the turbo pressure increasing from 0.9 to 1.0 bar. More importantly, it cuts the already ridiculous 0 to 60 mph time from 3.6 to 3.5 seconds. Straight into supercar territory. The S-Model is also better prepared for the cornering stuff, since its
AWD includes a limited slip diff.
Europeans see the standard model jump 32 HP and 20 Nm ahead of the previous model year CLS63 AMG. Thus, this offers 557 HP and 720 Nm. On the Old Continent, the CLS63 AMG S-Model delivers 585 HP and 800 Nm. Guess the Germans like round figures. As a recap, your CLS63 AMG can now complete the 0-100 km/h sprint in 4.2 (RWD), 3.7 or 3.6 seconds. We wished they used teaching methods like this back when we were in school.
