Zero X and MX Electric Motorcycles Recalled

It appears that not only conventional motorbikes have problems and are issued recalls, as electric ones have some issues themselves. Zero Motorcycles has recently issued a recall notice after the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said that the safety warning concerns 2009 Zero X and MX models, due to a problem with the throttle mechanism.

The voluntary recalls refers to some 200 electric motorcycles built between December 2008 and August 2009. It appears that throttles can become disconnected or stuck in the open position. The company has already received three reports of unexpected acceleration, including one resulting in minor injuries.

“The throttle on the recalled motorcycles can become stuck in the open position or become disconnected. In the “Easy” or the “0-25” mode, this can unexpectedly lead to full power when turning on the power, resulting in a loss of control and serious injury to the rider,”
the warning stated.

Just as expected, Zero will conduct any necessary repairs free of charge and recommends that owners of the models in question to stop using the motorcycle immediately and contact the closest U.S. dealership.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled motorcycles and contact Zero Motorcycles to schedule a free repair. Registered owners of the affected motorcycles have been mailed a direct notice,”
the safety warning added.

According to the safety recall, owners have been mailed a notice of the recall. A factory representative said the repair involves removing and replacing a handlebar-mounted “dashboard” containing the on-off switch and key cylinder. He said the fix should take about 10-15 minutes to complete.
