The Yamaha YZF-R1 flagship supersport isn’t just a winner on the racetrack as it recently shows it can score max points in other categories, like design, where it grabbed the top spot on the list.
The “German Design Award” design competition has picked the YZF-R1 for top place now. The achievement represents Yamaha Motor’s first nomination for this award and was selected as a first-time category winner from among over 4,000 entries.

Moreover, the German Design Awards gets to be the fourth design award scored by the YZF-R1, adding to the Good Design Award 2015, iF Design Award 2016, and the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2016.

The German Design Council, part of the German Design Award, recommends worldwide products which have already been evaluated as a high design standard. You can imagine this as being the crème de la crème awards when it comes to style.

Only after receiving that recommendation can an application be made for this internationally-prestigious design award. The title of winner is an award of excellence bestowed only on works chosen by the jury from within each category.

The Yamaha YZF-R1 was conceived to allow regular riders to experience the technical concepts of a MotoGP YZR-M1 track beast, which means it comes equipped with the potential for a circuit-grade top speed.

The 2017 model is powered by a 998 cc inline-four engine making 200 HP at 13,500 rpm and 112 Nm of torque at 11,500 rpm. The powerhouse is surrounded by an aluminum Deltabox frame, contributing to a total weight of 199 kg (439 lb), including oil and fuel.

To cope with all that power, the YZF-R1 comes packed with electronic safety features, starting with the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and the variable Traction Control System to the Launch Control System and the Quick Shift System.
