You hear so much of the dangers of texting and driving that you’d think drivers would understand that any other activity that distracts them from the actual driving is dangerous. And illegal.
This one woman speeding down a busy highway in New Zealand clearly didn’t get the memo. She was captured on camera driving and reading an actual book. A biker passing by her small red car was so shocked at the sight that he even took the time to warn her to “put that f***ing s**t away.”
He then uploaded the video to the Facebook page Highway Express Trucking NZ as a warning to other drivers that distracted driving is dangerous – and potentially fatal. Commenters pointed out that they’ve seen drivers do much stranger things behind the wheel, like shave or do their hair and makeup.
We’re not even going to get into the woman’s love of actual printed books, when the electronic variant is much cheaper and considerably more eco-friendly. But for her to speed down a busy highway while engrossed in reading is the epitome of stupidity at the wheel.
Sure, some commenters on the Facebook post praise her for multitasking. Being able to do 2 things at once doesn’t mean she’s right to do them. It just means that, for the short time the biker filmed her without her knowing it, she was able to do both and not kill herself or any other person on that highway.
That said, don’t do this. Using your phone to text, chat or scroll through emails or social media is illegal and, sadly, still the cause of many accidents, some of them fatal. Doing your nails, putting on makeup, looking at the other passengers in the car or, yes, reading books, is just as dangerous because it distracts from the act of driving.
