Williams' KERS Featured on Porsche 911 GT3 R Hybrid

While the majority of the Formula One teams proposed a gentleman's agreement regarding the usage of the Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) for the upcoming season of F1 – something that all the members of the FOTA later agreed on – Williams F1 Team will be one step ahead of them, reaping the benefits of their flywheel-based KERS system.

Unlike the other team that have already prepared their KERS system for the 2009 season of Formula One – Ferrari, McLaren, BMW and Renault had already debuted their technologies last year – Williams proceeded to a mechanical development of the unit.

The reason for that was quite simple. Frank Williams did not plan the system as a sine-qua-non element of his F1 car, but as a piece of technology that would greatly benefit the road car industry in the near future. They actually announced that they plan to sell their KERS technology to the interested car manufacturers when they'll finish the development stages.

And that moment has finally come, as the team confirmed earlier today that their KERS technology will be debuted on Porsche's new 911 GT3 R Hybrid road car, a model that will be presented to the media during the upcoming Geneva Auto Show next month.

We hope that this will be just the start of the evolution of hybrid systems developed for formula one moving across to applications where they can contribute to cleaner and more powerful vehicles,” said Williams' chief operating officer Alex Burns, who also confirmed that the technology will be made available for buses, trains, ships and wind power generation.

And that's not all, as the Porsche 911 is likely to debut Williams-developed KERS unit during this season's Nurburgring 24 hour race, scheduled to take place in May. The news was already made official by the German manufacturer.
