Back in 1966, Carroll Shelby decided to end production of the iconic Shelby Cobra with the Super Snake. It started as a Competition Cobra that was fitted with Twin Paxton Superchargers for a final output of 800 horsepower. Only two were built. One was destroyed, while the one that remained with Carroll was auction off for $5 million seven years ago.
The Super Snake was definitely the ultimate Cobra, the “Cobra to End all Cobras”. But as far a replicas go, the meanest Cobra around is the Weineck 780 CUI, a limited edition roadster built by Klaus Weibeck in 2005 in only 15 units. Powered by an outrageous 12.7-liter (!!!) V8 engine with dual Holley carburetors, the Weineck Cobra has 1,100 hp and 1.760 Nm (1,298 lb-ft) under the hood and can accelerate from 0 to 300 km/h (186 mph) in just 10 seconds.
If you’re wondering why are we reporting about this car, it’s because one of the 15 example was auctioned off by RM Auctions in Paris yesterday, fetching €61.600 ($83,300), quite the bargain compared to just about any original Shelby Cobra.
