What’s It Gonna Be, Toyota Celica or Scion tC?

One of this year’s jaw droppers at Tokyo Motor Show was Toyota’s FT-86 concept car. It’s true, it was named a concept car, but there is no doubt that it will foreshadow a new rear-wheel-drive coupe production car for the Japanese car manufacturer. So things look quite certain, but the question on everyone’s lips is what Toyota will call the final version when it hits the market.

For enthusiasts in Japan and Europe, the Celica name makes sense, as it carries a certain history among fans. It’s true it hasn’t been used for four years, but that not really an issue.

Another possibility is the Scion tC name used for a car in the United States of America. Just like the Celica, Scion tC was a front wheel drive coupe, so the previous model’s traction is not really an issue in determining the vehicle’s name.

So what are the odds? Well, keep in mind that Scion is a brand that only activates in North America, so either way, Toyota still needs a name for its domestic market as well as overseas. That means there’s a pretty good chance that the staggering FT-86 will hit Europe as a new Toyota Celica.

We don’t really care what’s it called, as long as it has good value for money and a strong engine. As far as we’re concerned, this might just turn out to be another classic.
