The US automotive landscape is changing – aside from the eternal Detroit Three trucks at the top, Toyota's fourth place from 2023 is threatened by the rising fortunes of the world's best-selling nameplate – the all-electric Tesla Model Y.
Last year, the F-Series was first, Silverado was second, Ram was third, Toyota's RAV4 was fourth, and Tesla's Model Y was fifth at the top of best-selling nameplates in America. Even the Model 3 sedan wasn't too far away, in 12th position. Then we also found out that according to the latest estimates, the Toyota RAV4 was dethroned from the worldwide sales throne by the same Tesla Model Y. So, is there any way to stop them?

Nobody can be sure, especially since the Tesla Model 3 just got upgraded to Highland specifications and will surely become even more attractive for legacy car drivers. For example, some carmakers are already thinking about avoiding the direct clash with the Model 3 and Model Y – Hyundai is selling the quirky Ioniq 6 as an alternative, and Honda presented at CES 2024 the 0 Series of concepts hinting at the Saloon being very close to what they want to introduce in the next years on the market. So, can Toyota sit on the sidelines and not participate in the EV game?

Not really, at least not according to the imaginative realm of digital car content creators. For example, Vince Burlapp (aka vburlapp on social media or burlappcar.com) is a prolific virtual artist who loves to dream of all the latest models across the wide-ranging automotive realm – and now he's thinking that a mid-size EV sedan from Toyota would be just what the doctor ordered to fight Tesla and other foes.

The hypothetical zero-emissions Camry EV is unlike anything we have seen in the real world, and for good reason – the pixel master thinks that Toyota needs a futuristic design to mitigate the peril of Honda's new EVs as well as represent a viable alternative for the Tesla models, which are very close to normal automobiles in terms of design, if not of features.

The unofficial design project sees the hypothetical Toyota Camry EV distance itself from the current and upcoming 2025 models on the outside, where it features an entirely different style than what we are used to in the real world. Inside, on the other hand, the CGI expert keeps the connection with the ICE-powered models as a way to make people comfortable with the switch from hybrid to fully electric, presumably.

Anyway, it's going to be a while before we see a Camry EV (if ever) on the roads, and until then, Toyota will soon introduce the 2025 model year with a complete redesign and cabin overhaul, plus exclusive hybrid power under the hood with FWD and AWD setups. So, will you buy that one or wait for a potential Camry EV?
