Webber Will Not Guarantee F1 Presence in 2012

Red Bull's Mark Webber cannot guarantee his fans that he will continue to race in Formula One in 2012. The Melbourne fans might not have anybody to cheer for during their F1 round from 2012 onwards, especially if Webber goes on to win the world title by then.

The 33-year old racer has recently signed a one-year extension to his deal with Red Bull, which will keep him at Milton Keynes for the entire duration of the 2011 season. Although it was initially believed Red Bull were the ones to opt for a one-year addition to his current contract, it apparently was Webber's idea not to commit to the team (and sport in general) for more than one year.

I cannot guarantee that my head will be in the same place in 2012. For sure I want to go for the championship. I know that it changes people's lives, changes the person and I want to know how it feels,” Webber told Brazil's weekly Esporte Espetacular programme, while currently leading the F1 overall classification with 7 races to go.

Although many rate him lower as compared to his much younger teammate Sebastian Vettel, Wetter pretty much beat the odds this season, becoming the winningest driver after 12 rounds. He triumphed 4 times in 2010, holding double the number of wins as compared to each of his 4 title rivals – Vettel, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso.

Once conquering the world title will have been achieved (hopefully), Webber plans to leave the sport and become a mentor for young people. As his own experience through the world of motor racing has been quite extraordinary – at one point, he nearly quit racing while in the F3 series due to lack of funds, until Aussie rugby legend David Campese borrowed him GBP25,000 to continue his career – he thinks he has what it takes to mentor youngsters who “expect little from their life.”

I want them to realise that they can dream higher and achieve. Maybe I will do a little mountain climbing, who knows. Definitely (I will do) some more sporting challenges before I get too old and return to Australia to drink red wine,” added Webber.
