Webber Wanted to Take Out Title Rivals in Korea - Berger

Here's something new! Former Grand Prix driver Gerhard Berger believes what happened to Mark Webber in the Korean Grand Prix – crashing out of the race, that is – was not entirely the result of a driving mistake, but of his desire to take out at least one championship rival out of the title race.

A few laps after the Safety Car went in last Sunday, Webber lost control of his car after going over a wet kerb and spun. At the time, he was 14 points ahead of Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel in the overall standings, while also racing with the former on his tails at the time his car rolled back the circuit.

In the process, he also made contact with 4th placed Nico Rosberg, causing the German to call it a day. According to Berger, the real target was Alonso.

I don't understand why Webber didn't hit the brakes. It was crazy to roll back across the track like that,” Berger was quoted as saying to the media on Monday. “He took out Rosberg, but it was the wrong one. I think in his mind he would have preferred Alonso or Hamilton,” he continued in an interview with Austrian Servus TV.

Asked to explain his theory, Berger said that once Webber knew there was nothing he could do to avoid his accident, he instantly thought to take one of his rivals with him. Ergo, his move was as deliberate as sunshine, he argued.

Yes, I think that's (his crashing was deliberate) very clear. He goes off and he knows it's over. In this moment you're frustrated and a thousand thoughts go through your head. It's very obvious, you can see his wheels are not locked up. Perhaps he had a brake problem, but I don't think so,” concluded Berger.

A reaction from Webber is inevitable, and we're dying to see how he responds to these accusations.
