MotorTrend just started its newest edition of Best Driver's Car Week and a brand new 2014 Mercedes-Benz E63 S-AMG Wagon somehow found itself among the contenders. The video of its rather composed (for an AMG) hot lap on the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was recently posted on YouTube.
Driven by professional racing driver Randy Pabst, the white station wagon on steroids managed a lap time of 1:42.39 minutes, making it about four seconds slower than the far more powerful and also much lighter 2013 SRT Viper, which was tested in the same day.

Not too shabby for a wagon that can haul five people, their luggage and pretty much all their carry-able belongings in full comfort.

The 2014 E63 S-AMG has the same twin-turbocharged V8 from the regular E63, only its tuned to offer 585 hp (577 hp in American speak) and 800 Nm (590 lb ft). Along with a performance 4Matic all-wheel drive system distributing torque in a 33/67 bias between the front and the rear wheels, the understated station wagon on crack can reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from a dead stop in just 3.7 seconds.

Apart from a bit of unexpected understeer, easily correctable from the weight of the right foot, the car's handling provided to be surprisingly good for such a big and heavy car. Check out the somewhat oddly-edited video of the feat for yourself below.
