Wrecking cars of all sorts in movies or music videos is a common thing, and, truth be told, the bigger the damage and the bill, the better the scene. Just ask Henry Blight Halicki, who totaled 93 vehicles in the 1974 "Gone in 60 Seconds" film, or... Bruce Willis.
However, destroying a great deal of cars in a video clip is a bit more complicated. Not that we haven't seen a lot of artists do that, but the amount is never comparable. Which brings us to the latest band to show an automobile getting damaged in their music video: Vampire Weekend.
We really don't know why their new single, Diane Young, features a Saab 900 Turbo Convertible being burned in slow-motion, but we must admit it's somewhat different than what we've seen before. But why feature almost three minutes of a scene? Probably the first lyrics of the song can provide an answer: "You torched a Saab like a pile of leaves, I’d gone to find some better wheels"
Maybe Vampire Weekend should have been a little more anxious about their clip and show us the "finding some better wheels" part or Diane Young herself. Just saying, you know? Whatever the case, we really feel sorry for the Saab. Actually for the Saabs, because the video features a flaming 900 three-door coupe near the end as well.
