Want To Drive a Jet Train?

As crazy as it may sound, you can try out a jet-powered rail car. Don’t think you can do that in reality, but at least you can feel a bit of the outlandish experience in a simulator.
We ended up again in “that” part of YouTube today and stumbled upon this little strange gem. A jet train you can try out in Train Simulator 2014 put out by Microsoft last year.

The fan-made downloadable jet train is as whacky as it sounds. It’s actually an airplane GE90 jet engine (probably borrowed from Microsoft’s Flight Simulator) strapped to a frame fitted with two bogies to be able to use a railway.

Even if it sounds crazy, it does make sense due to those small contact patches between the steel wheels and the rail itself that offer low friction. If fact, you’ll be surprised to know there were a few prototypes of jet trains used in the real world too.

And don’t you confuse them with gas turbine locomotives. These trains were really propelled by the jet engines’ thrust. You can look up for the M-497 Black Beetle or the Russian SVL for more information.

In case you already have Train Simulator 2014 and want to try out the crazy prototype, you can find the download link in the video’s description.
