If anything, a Vyrus motorcycle is one of the things one expects least to see in an official FIM-sanctioned racing series, but this is just about to become reality because a Vyrus 986 M2 will make appearance in the CEV Moto2 races this year. If you’re not familiar with the acronym, CEV, sometimes funnily referred to as “the Spanish CEV” stands for Campeonato Espanol de Velocidad (Spanish Speed Championship).
Taking place under the FIM “blessing”, the CEV is one of the racing series which provide the Grand Prix with fresh talents. Spain is undoubtedly THE motorcycle racing nation, with this sport being almost on par with football when it comes to popularity and the number of top-tier stars.

The same engine, a completely new chassis paradigm

In a way we could say that Moto2 has been under a monopoly when it comes to the engines used. Honda power plants are authoritatively dominating the Moto2 segment, and the Vyrus is not making an exception. The Vyrus 986 M2 is powered by a 599cc liquid-cooled Honda engine which can deliver 125 hp at 13,000 rpm, mated to a 6-speed transmission by means of a classic wet multi-disc clutch, and fed through Honda’s injection system.

The frame however, is a completely different story. Unlike the rest of the Moto2 field who uses Suter, Kalex or FTR frames which are almost identical, Vyrus will be using their own double inverted omega chassis, with swingarms at both ends and hub center steering. Suspensions are obviously different from the rest, and they employ proprietary double-rockers with pushrods, of course upgraded to race specs.

Unlike other machines, the Vyrus is scantily clad, but the aerodynamic handicap could be compensated by the lighter build. The few bodywork elements are made from carbon fiber and their reduced dimensions will be most likely optimized for the best performance.

17-year-old English rider Bradley Ray will be at the helm of the Vyrus 986 M2. Having finished in an impressive 4th position in 2014, Ray has yet another chance to add even more accolades to his name, and we might even see him making a daring step to GP races, too. Since the season kickoff is not far, it won’t be long until we find out how Vyrus’ works team fares in real racing series.
