At the 20111 Tokyo Motor Show, Volkswagen unveiled the Cross Coupe SUV concept (shown above) which they said “hints at how a crossover between a four-door coupé and an SUV could look like.”
Now such a vehicle could become production reality in the coming years, as VW takes notice of BMW’s success with the X6. Also, Audi is making their own entry into this market with the Q6, which is currently undergoing testing in preparation for a launch.
German website Autobild reports that the SUV-coupe in question could be called the Touareg CC and it could arrive as early as 2015. Little else is known about the innovations that VW has in store for us, other than the fact that it’s going to be based on a brand new platform.
The Cross Coupe concept used a hybrid drivetrain consisting of a TSI engine and a 54 hp electric motor at the front, plus another one at the back with 11 hp. Combined output is 265 horsepower, which is about as much as the most powerful 2.0 turbo VW makes.
