Volvo V60 Earns Top Safety Rating From Euro NCAP

Based on the data recently revealed by Euro NCAP, the new Volvo V60 estate is one of the safest cars on the market right now for both adult and child occupants, also getting a 100 percent score for its safety assistance systems. The passenger compartment remained stable in the frontal impact, the windscreen pillar being deformed rearward only 1mm after the test, which is a very impressive achievement all on its own. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger.

In the side barrier test, the Volvo scored maximum points, all body regions being well protected, while In the more severe side pole impact, dummy readings of rib compression indicated marginal protection of the chest. The seat and its fixed-position head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries in a rear-end collision.

In case of child occupant protection, the new estate model performed perfectly, receiving 12 points for both 3 year old and 18 month old occupants.

“Both child dummies were seated rearward-facing in the frontal and side impact tests. The V60 gained maximum points for its protection of the dummies in the dynamic tests. The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, information provided to the driver regarding the status of the airbag is not sufficiently clear. A non-permanent pictogram-only label gives insufficient warning of the dangers of using a rearward facing restraint in this seating position without first disabling the airbag,”
the European safety body says.

In case of collision with pedestrians, the V60 bumper provided good protection in some of the areas tested and marginal in others. In most areas likely to be struck by a child, the bonnet provided good protection against head injuries.

All of the car’s safety assistance systems performed perfectly, with the Electronic Stability Control is standard equipment on the V60 and met Euro NCAP's test requirements.
