The Volvo S90 will probably go down in history as the car with the most bizarre reveal ever. It all started back in August when two images with the scale model car were published on the internet.
September saw another batch of low-res photos make their way onto the world wide web and, guess what, the toy car wasn't wearing any camouflage. But nothing beats this latest set of images that catch the new Swedish sedan from all possible angles (yes, there's one shot of its belly as well), leaving us with very little to wonder about the new car's looks.
It all started when Volvo issued an order for 2,000 1:43 scale models from French company Norev, which further commissioned the job to a Chinese firm. An employee of the latter stole twenty of the finished products, of which two are still missing. Guess what colors those two were. Uhm... gray and blue, by any chance? Wow, how did you know?
Was there a contract breach? Uhmm, yes, very much so. But Volvo wasn't hasty about it and, having assessed the public and media reaction, decided it was actually a good thing.
And looking at the car, you can kind of see why. The S90 looks refreshingly different from everything the Germans are currently offering. Not better, not worse, just different. Volvo's philosophy to beat the Germans relies on three main ideas: design, technology and service.
The design part is simple. Sweeden is a country well known for its proclivity with design, and it's more than just IKEA we're talking about here. There is a certain Scandinavian style and the new Volvo cars make full use of it both inside and out.
Volvo is also betting big on technology, with the Swedes leading the way in terms of autonomous driving in more ways than one. And by that we mean they're the first company to announce assuming liability in case of a crash during autonomous driving.
When it comes to service, that's a little more subjective. “The Germans are selling steel, we are selling a promise. We will work on giving a better service than the Germans,” said Alan Vissner, Managing director for brand sales and advertisement, quoted by SwedeSpeed.
