Volkswagen is continuing the work on the New Compact Coupe (Jetta Coupe) project, with the latest sign of the car’s development being a set of patent drawings for the trademark office.

The images, which have been published by carscoop.blogspot.com, reveal the fact that the car has received slight modifications compared to the concept unveiled in January at the 2010 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

As you can see in the images below, the car comes with a few changes which indicate that it has been brought closer to the production form. The first one is a redesigned front grille, which is now following the VW family identity. Then there’s the front bumper, which now accommodates a set of fog lights. Moving to the rear side of the car, we can see that the exhaust pipes are now visible. These are generously-sized and use a complex, trapezoidal-like design, underlining the car’s sporty intentions.

Back in January, VW announced that if the car was ever to be produced, it would be positioned between the Scirocco Coupe, which is not offered in North America, and the CC (sporty Passat derivative).

The vehicle borrows many design cues from the Audi A5 Coupe and comes with a 2+2 seating layout. The concept showcased at NAIAS uses a hybrid powertrain, comprising of a 1.4 liter TSI engine delivering 150 hp and an electric motor developing 27 hp, which relies on a lithium-ion battery pack placed at the rear of the car for optimal weight distribution.

The Jetta Coupe is expected to be offered as a production vehicle, hitting the market by 2012.
