At the Volkswagen preview media event in Frankfurt, big boss Martin Winterkorn revealed the Group's electric plans for the future, saying they want to become the biggest name in the electric mobility business by the year 2018.
On stage with him were four cars: the new e-Up! and e-Golf, Audi A3 e-tron and 2014 Panamera S E-Hybrid. Of course, you can't invade the world with three hatchbacks and a four-door coupe, so there are more to come.
Motor Trend has gotten its hands on internal documents from Volkswagen which suggest next year alone there will be seven new e-mobility vehicles launched next year.
Audi will have e-tron versions of the A3, A6, A8 and Q7. The only one we know anything right now is the A3 e-tron, which is powered by a combination of 1.4 TFSI engine and 102 PS electric motor. This latest piece of info confirms once more that the new Q7 SUV is indeed coming next year.
As for Porsche, the Cayenne is the likely recepient of an identical system to the one on the Panamera S E-Hybrid. This combines a 320 PS V6 engine with a 95 PS electric motor powered by a 9.4 kWh battery.
Volkswagen will reportedly have two more plug-in vehicles launching next year, the Golf TwinDrive and Passat TwinDrive. Officially, not a lot is known about this new technology, but SEAT had a plug-in hybrid concept called the Leon Twin Drive in 2009.
As a fleet project, Volkswagen tested 20 Golf Vs they called twinDRIVE which had ranges of up to 900 km (560 mi) and promises fuel consumption of 2.1 L/100 km. Their setup was different to the A3 e-tron in that they used diesel engines and placed the electric motors in the rear wheel hubs.
