Lapping the Nurburgring in a machine that's totally unfit for a job is something that takes place more often than you'd expect. Then again, hitting the world's most challenging racetrack in a contraption that has no place on Green Hell asphalt has one golden rule, which involves not letting your imagination transform this into a racecar. Well, as it turns out, the driver of a Volkswagen Amarok failed to obey this rule and paid the price.
The German pickup truck hit the Nurburgring last weekend, engaging in the Touristenfahrten (Tourist Days) adventure that took place on Sunday. Alas, the fun of the aficionado behind the wheel didn't last long, as the Amarok ended up in the guardrail.
Just before the Amarok reaches the bend that sees it falling, we can see three different machines tackling the bend, namely a Renault Megane RS, a BMW 3 Series and a 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 - by the way, the Zuffenhausen machine is dressed in Lizard Green, its launch color.
Returning to the Vee-Dub, its driver carried way too much speed into the bend and this isn't the only mistake the man made - he also used the wrong line, with this kind of error easily causing trouble on a track as unforgiving as the one we have here.
The behavior of the car might seem odd to an untrained eye, but this can be explained. For one thing, we can clearly see the electronic nannies stepping in - their aim is to prevent the car from rolling and from losing the back end.
Noticing the understeer that was taking the pickup closer and closer to the point where the rubble meets the road, the driver pulled the emergency brake. And while this smoked the rear tires, it didn't manage to do much else.
The Amarok inevitably hit the metallic element on the side of the track, with the impact taking a toll on two of the wheels. And while the first was the one that actually hit the guardrail, the second was the... spare wheel.
And no, we're not sure why the latter detached from its under-the-bed location during this impact.
