Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto will ride into St. Louis’ Edward Jones Dome with a slim, six-point lead over TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray Racing’s Chad Reed in the Supercross class’ season point standings.
This season, the battle for the championship is very fierce with five Supercross-class riders having chances for the AMA Supercross crown. Leading the standings is Villopoto with 255 points, with Chad Reed following close with 249 points. Third in the standings is Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Ryan Dungey with 248 points. American Honda’s Trey Canard is in fourth with 239 points and Team San Manuel Yamaha’s James Stewart is currently fifth with a total of 234 points.
The pack is separated by 21 points and the championship will undoubtedly go down to the finale at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
Each of the five title contenders managed to earn at least one victory in this year’s Monster Energy AMA Supercross, so it could be everybody’s race in St. Louis.
Last year in St. Louis, Dungey won his fifth Supercross class main event of the 2010 Monster Energy Supercross season at the Edward Jones Dome in front of a nearly sold-out crowd and we bet he wants to do it again. We’ll have to wait and see what Villopoto, Stewart, Canard and Reed have to say about it.
