Electric pickup trucks are set to come our way via Mexico, with VIA Motors now kicking off production at its facility there. The company, which is supported by Bob Lutz, is proposing range-extended electric work horses.
Lutz has explained VIA Motor’s ways multiple times before and now the company is ready for action. Its facility, located in San Luis Potozi, Mexico has a production capacity of up to 10,000 units per year, so the customer demand is the only piece they need to add to the puzzle right now.
Speaking of Bob Lutz, the vehicle is based on a General Motors pickup truck platform. The muscle comes from an electric motor delivering 402 HP and a peak torque of 300 lb-ft (Nm).
In addition, there’s a 4.3-liter V6 petrol engine that feeds power to an electric generator, which can deliver 201 HP, keeping the batteries charged. We’re talking about a 24 kWh battery pack that can provide a range of 35-40 miles (km) before the petrol unit needs to start charging.
