GM might be able to complain about their European division’s losses, but without Opel’s platforms and engines they would not be selling as many Buicks in China. In addition, the US-market Chevrolet range is filled with Opel’s Ecotec engines, from the 1.2-liter 85 hp in the 2013 Spark to the turbo 2-liter in the Malibu.
Another brilliant Opel engine is making its way to America. We’re talking about the four-cylinder 1.6-liter Ecotec turbo that comes with direct fuel injection and start/stop technology. The unit will most likely make about 180 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque.

Production will begin towards the end of the year at GM’s Hungary plant and we should see the engine being used in the next model year Malibu, Sonic or Cruze. It might even see service in the GMC Terrain.

This move should help GM come closer to achieving its CAFE targets.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
