No, it isn’t a new M5 engine stuck under the hood of a late 80s, early 90s BMW 3-Series, despite displacing the same 4.4-lites as the all-new twin-turbo unit. The Bavarian automaker has been using a 4.4-liter V8 for years, and the one under the bonnet of this highly-modified E30 is, in fact, lifted from an E39 540i.
This gives the car 282 hp and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft), with the power is transmitted to the road via a five-speed gearbox from the E39 535i. However, the list of BMW-sourced mods goes even further, as the car gets E36 M3 brakes on the front and E36 325i brakes on the read, with a radiator sourced from a diesel 324td, to keep everything cool. The suspension also seems lower (and probably stiffer) - an important aspect in a car with this much power and torque.
