As we’ve told you every time we got a chance, the BMW 3-Series has grown to be a fine figure of a car. It’s always been THE benchmark car, and despite them trying hard with other sorts of products, nothing BMW makes has sold any better. In fact, the 3-Series and the 1-Series that accounted for 49 percent of the total figure in 2010.
The biggest change that came with the introduction of the F30 3-Sereis is the added length - 93 mm (3.66 inches), while the wheelbase is 50 mm (1.96 inches) bigger as well. The car is now equal in this aspect to the E23 7-Series, yes 7-Series, that was built until 1986.

In fact, the 1-Series M Coupe is widely considered the only real successor to the E30 M3. So BMW has to reconsider what the smallest sedan they offer can be, and according to Autocar a smaller 1-Series sedan is coming.

The car will be a rival for the upcoming Audi A3 sedan and Mercedes CLA four-door coupe, so BMW can get away with creating a budget car based on the modular front-drive platform used by the upcoming 1-Series GT and MINI Cooper.

But for now, rumors indicate that the 1-Series sedan will be rear-drive and offer even the top-most 135i straight-six option.

Expect this interesting newcomer to arrive after the coupe and convertible, most likely in 2015.
