Ultimate BMW Experience: Witness Spartanburg at Work

People with a soft spot for the "how-its-made" phrase will get a chance to satisfy their curiosity about how a BMW X5 or X6 are being built. BMW's Spartanburg facility in South Carolina is opening its doors, more than ever, for tourists.

“People have been asking us for more tours.
We have a lot of resources here. So we're going to try to make more of them available to people who are interested," Spartanburg spokeswoman Bunny Richardson was quoted as saying by Autonews.

Called the Ultimate BMW Experience, the new tour concept will cost those interested $99 and can only be experienced after a reservation has been made.

The tour is three-days long and includes a behind-the-scenes guided walk through the plant, a tour of the plant's on-site Zentrum museum and theater, and a two-hour driving experience at the manufacturer's Performance Center driving school.

For aficionados, BMW is throwing in access to rare-vehicle demonstrations and “unique culinary events.” For an extra $7, tourists can take a tour into the areas where the X5 and X6 are being assembled, the paint shop and the door line.

To make the Ultimate BMW Experience, premium visitors will be part of events like receptions and catered meals.

The BMW Spartanburg facility was built starting with 1992 and, over time, cost BMW $2.2 billion. All the manufacturing processes in Spartanburg are done under a single roof.
