The British government has just announced the name of the nine electric vehicles that are eligible for subsidies if purchased until the end of March 2012. In an effort to encourage British drivers adopt more green vehicles, the local authorities have granted 43 million pounds to support a program in which every EV buyer could receive up to 5,000 pounds if he picks an electric vehicle as his future ride.
However, only nine vehicles are included in the campaign, with the subsidy to vary by vehicle and the way the auto industry performs at a given moment. The nine models are Mitsubishi's iMiEV, Daimler's smart fortwo electric drive, Peugeot's iON, Citroen's CZero, the Nissan Leaf, the Tata Vista electric vehicle; the Toyota Prius Plug-in, Vauxhall's Ampera and General Motors' Chevrolet Volt.
Of course, companies who manufacture electric cars are more than happy with the announcement, mostly because the subsidies will increase their EV sales significantly in the United Kingdom.
Chevrolet for example, which actually has two models within the eligible models (the Ampera is a rebadged Volt specifically designed for the European market), applauded the initiative and used the occasion to emphasize the Volt's abilities to protect the environment and its owner's wallet.
"We are extremely pleased that the Government has accepted the Volt within its grant programme - as the first car in the world of its type, it means we can really hit the ground running when it arrives in the UK. Volt is an incredible car that has already changed the game in its home market - with its innovative range-extender motor, it's the first no-compromise electric car that completely alleviates the range anxiety felt by users of pure electric vehicles, yet has the capacity to operate at all times with zero tailpipe emissions," Chevrolet UK Managing Director, Mark Terry, said.
