So what if taxi drivers riot on the streets against their service, that won’t stop the San Francisco-based transport service from going forward. And if the streets won’t fit anymore, the waters surely will do the job. Uber recently announced they launched UberBOAT service in Istanbul, Turkey’s most crowded city and probably one of the most touristic places on the planet.
18% of the country’s inhabitants reside in Istanbul. It is a transcontinental city in Europe and Asia. Do you want more specs? It’s one of the world’s most populous cities and ranks as world’s 5th-largest city proper, dropping the rank to the 24th place as an urban area and the 18th place as a metro area.

The point is that millions of foreign visitors visit the city every day. Uber clearly found the opportunity, so they launched their service here one year ago. Now, to celebrate their presence, the company has decided to bring another one of their services. They partnered up with a local luxury sea transport company dubbed Navette, and now offer locals and tourists to chance to request an UberBOAT and ride to their destination.

According to their blog post, fares are based on distance (sea mile) and time and will be automatically charged on the customer’s credit card at the end of a trip. Several transportation services offer the connection between the two continents. These includes public ferries, an underground metro tunnel, and two intercontinental suspension bridges. Not to speak of a third bridge and a car tunnel currently under construction.

Competition is pretty big, but that doesn’t seem to worry Uber. The company’s water-taxi service will start at 50 liras ($19), and each boat has capacity for 7 to 10 passengers. For example, a trip from the Ciragan Hotel, which is a converted Ottoman palace, to the closest part of the coastline to Istanbul’s main airport will cost around 400 liras.
