The all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma is just around the corner as the rumor mill thinks that after the 2023 Los Angeles Auto Show debut of the first-ever Crown Signia SUV and the next-gen 2025 Camry Hybrid, there will be time to start sales of the mid-size pickup truck before the year ends.
Right now, it is still on the 'upcoming' list alongside the 2024 Land Cruiser, 2024 GR86 Trueno special edition, and those 2025MY vehicles we just talked about. "Reengineered from the ground up, this legendary machine continues to deliver but is now more powerful, more capable, and more connected to you than ever before. Whether you are overlanding across rugged terrain or kicking up monster rooster tails over sand dunes, there is a Tacoma that will fit your needs and help you reach new limits."

There's also fine print that should say that – although comprehensive – the 2024 Tacoma lineup will not fulfill all dreams. Some diehard fans might ask – what is left to dream about? After all, the fourth-gen Tacoma that was officially unveiled in May this year has Toyota's new TNGA-F global body-on-frame vehicle platform, Calty Design styling, and no less than eight trim levels.

Six of them are carried from the current model - SR, SR5, Limited, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Pro. But the other two are pretty magical, indeed – along with the new 2.4-liter, 326-hp hybrid i-Force Max powertrain. First, there is the return of the TRD PreRunner grade, which is exclusively available with the new XtraCab body and rear-wheel-drive. Secondly, there is also the first-ever Trailhunter – a variant explicitly built for overlanding with stuff like an ARB-designed Old Emu suspension, standard snorkel, and bronze-colored accents around the body, among others.

Considered a halo model alongside the TRD Pro, the Tacoma Trailhunter is a four-door Double Cab available with both the short 5-foot or long 6-foot bed and rocking a slew of standard equipment. It also packs the i-Force Max as the standard powertrain and eight-speed automatic plus max towing and payload credentials of 6k and 1,709 pounds. There's also the JBL Flex portable speaker – if you want to take your music with you around the base camp or three feet underwater, apparently!

All that makes the 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter a capable adventure rig, at least at first sight, right? But what if people wanted the Trailhunter capabilities in a more compact format? There's no XtraCab Trailhunter, so folks had to think of something else. And because he believes there are never enough two-door off-road SUVs around, the imaginative realm of digital car content creators just invented one for Toyota.

More precisely, Jim, the virtual artist known as jlord8 on social media, has stopped messing with all things GM and Ford – and he's now into quirky Toyota stuff like an old MR2 Shooting Brake or a 2025 Toyota Camry Supra, things like that. While those do not really make a lot of sense, the idea of having a Tacoma 2-Door SUV in Trailhunter form at your disposal is quite stellar, indeed. That way, Toyota could finally brawl with the 2-Door Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler on equal grounds.

Plus, with a 326-hp hybrid powertrain under the hood, maybe this hypothetical 2024 Tacoma 2-Door SUV won't be as powerful as the Ford Bronco Raptor or Jeep Wrangler 392. Still, it will undoubtedly look much more like the Bronco and Chevy K5 Blazer from the 1980s and will be more frugal, too!
