The 2013 DTM Season will start at Hockenheim on May 5th 2013. However, at the starting line, there will 10 BMW cars instead of 8.
How is that possible? BMW decided to offer its fans a chance to experience a race from inside a DTM car. The classic 1987 BMW M3 and the legendary BMW M1 will act as race taxis at each event in the DTM Calendar.
The classic cars will have experienced motorsport professionals behind the wheel in order to keep everything safe. The current title holder, the BMW M3 DTM has been developed following the majestic legacy of the 1987 M3 that used to dominate the racing championships back in the 80s and 90s. That was the car that Eric van der Poele drove to win the DTM title in BMW's first season in the series.
However, the main attraction will be BMW's only supercar, the M1. The version that will be transformed into a "race taxi" will have 477 HP exactly the same as the car Nelson Piquet drove in the Procar series in 1980.
The taxi drives will take place on the racetrack between practice and qualifying on Saturday, and before the main event on Sunday.
