Probably the most exclusive car BMW ever made was the M1. This was BMW's only supercar, developed in a joint-venture with Lamborghini and designed by the one and only Giorgetto Giugiaro. Even though the agreement between the 2 companies was dropped, the design of the M1 stayed the same, making it an exclusive car among BMWs.
There's a lot of talk today about whether BMW will release a new super-car on its centenary, the follow up to the iconic M1. No matter what the name of the new car will be (speculated between M1 and M8) BMW fans all over the world will want a chance to drive it, or even own it.
The legendary M1 had a center-mounted power plant (a first for BMW), named M88/1 that had a capacity of 3.5-liters, delivering 277 HP and 330 Nm of torque. Later on, the engine was heavily modified in order to participate in racing events and was taken up to 850 HP.
The only supercar that BMW ever made was discontinued in 1981 after only 456 cars were built and just 3 years after being unveiled and put in production. The reasons behind this decision are still unknown, but the hand-made BMW will forever be missed. The spirit of the M1 lived on in the M635CSi and the first-generation M5, which use a modified version of the M88/1 engine, the M88/3.
