Toyota's Pre-Collision System Controls Steering

Toyota’s plans for developing new safety technologies are somehow in the “sci-fi” category. The system developed by the Japanese manufacturer, is capable of taking control of the steering wheel in order to deviate away the vehiclefrom an eventual impact.Furthermore, a “live show” was put together by Toyota Motor Corp. at its facility near Mount Fuji, demonstrating the upcoming safety innovations, which made the public’s delight.

The novelty that is brought by the new pre-collision system, which also distances it from other competitors, is the steering control-feature. The new system uses cameras and a super sensitive radar called “millimeter-wave.” The new “gadgets” are installed in front of the vehicle in order to detect possible crashes. In order to avoid a potential crash the system calculates how steering and braking must be applied.

One of the manufacturer’s goals is to have zero fatalities, fact proved by the new safety feature. But the carmaker also avoided to announce when the system will be offered to general public. Although fatalities have been declining in auto accidents, thanks to improved safety features but on the other hand deaths among pedestrians in traffic accidents have not decreased.

Alongside the steering-control feature, Toyota has been developing a system that can block parts from the high-beam headlights, so that drivers could see clearly what was in front of them while the driver coming from the other direction would appear to be on low beam.Toyota also showed a steering wheel in testing that measures the heartbeat of the driver to prevent crashes that can happen when drivers suffer heart attacks.
