Toyota's Dark Room: the Kurapika Box

Japanese carmaker Toyota announced today it will start a new pedestrian education program, designed around what it calls the "Kurapika Box," an educational tool to be used to showcase the benefits of the use of reflective materials by pedestrians and bicycle riders at night.

The "Kurapika Box," a 1.5 meters long room which can be used indoors or outdoors, accurately recreates nighttime darkness. Those entering the box use lighted goggles to look at objects in the box that incorporate reflective material. The light from the goggles makes the objects visible, hence showcasing the benefits of using reflective materials when traveling at night.

"TMC has reaffirmed its commitment to customer safety as its top priority, based on the view that realizing a society free of traffic casualties requires an integrated approach encompassing people, cars and the traffic environment.  Accordingly, this year TMC will again be actively implementing a variety of traffic-safety awareness activities," Toyota says in a release.

For the time being, such boxes will be installed by Toyota at four facilities: Toyota Driving School Tokyo, Chubu Nippon Driver School, Toyota Safety Education Center "mobilitas" and Toyota City Traffic Safety Learning Center. They will be at first available for senior citizens.

According to studies, the number of traffic-accident fatalities declined in 2009 for the ninth consecutive year, falling below 4,000 for the first time in 57 years. Toyota says half of the casualties were senior citizens, and half of the senior citizens died at night, while walking or cycling.
