We’ve recently learned that the Hybrid-R technology that Toyota is developing will be showcased on a souped-up Yaris at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year.
However, the Japanese automaker has recently released more details of what to expect from the race-inspired hybrid powertrain.
The engineers used the technology from the Toyota TS030 Hybrid Le Mans racecar and adapted it so it can be used on a road going vehicle, the Yaris in this case.
So, the hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 300 bhp for the front wheels and two 60 bhp electric motors that spin the rear tires. There is also a third electric motor, located between the gasoline engine and the six-speed sequential gearbox, which works like a generator during deceleration, to power a super capacitor, and acceleration to power the rear electric motors.
The super capacitor gives the electric motors 40 bhp more for up to ten seconds in “Road” mode and up to 60 bhp in “Track” setup.
Of course, with 300 bhp going to the front wheels, you will say that this vehicle will have tons of understeer and torque steering, but the rear motors will handle that by distributing the power where it is needed independently.
Bet this little Yaris will offer huge amounts of fun on the track, which will also come with a standard cheesy smile on the driver’s face.
