Toyota has issued a safety recall for just around 1,400 examples of the 2023 model year Tundra and Sequoia. According to the Japanese automaker, the problem stems from the steel chain that secures the spare tire to the spare tire carrier on the underside of the vehicle.
Toyota claims the chain links hadn't been welded properly. Reading between the lines, the supplier of the spare tire carrier took the blame for this recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't said a word on this campaign thus far, which is why the supplier's name remains a mystery for the time being.

If said links break, the spare tire will detach from the vehicle, thus increasing the risk of a crash for the vehicles behind. As expected, Toyota's dealership network has been instructed to replace the carrier at no cost to the owner. Mailed notifications will be sent no later than early September 2023. In the meantime, owners of the 2023 model year Tundra and Sequoia can run their VINs on Toyota's website or the NHTSA's website to verify whether their full-size leviathans are recalled or not.

In typical fashion, Toyota hasn't shared the production dates of the affected vehicles. These dates, however, will become public once the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration picks up on this safety recall.

For the 2023 model year, the half-ton pickup is listed by the federal watchdog with three recalls for an incorrect load carrying capacity label, the instrument panel's display going blank, and the genuine accessory tonneau cover detaching due to loose attachment joints. In the latter's case, a whopping 130,266 trucks were recalled.

As of July 11, the Sequoia – which uses the underpinnings and oily bits of the Tundra – is listed with zero recalls. Exclusively offered with twin-turbo V6 hybrid muscle, the Sequoia indirectly replaces the full-size Land Cruiser in the Japanese automaker's lineup. The Land Cruiser is coming back for 2025, though, in the form of a sibling for the Lexus GX. Otherwise said, North America is getting the new Land Cruiser Prado.

If you're in the market for a Sequoia, prepare to spend more than $60,000 for the most basic of specifications. Pricing starts at $59,865 excluding the destination fee. Trim levels range from the SR5 to the go-anywhere TRD Pro ($77,565) and luxed-up Capstone ($76,865).

Officially designated i-FORCE MAX, the hybrid powertrain cranks out 437 ponies at 5,200 revolutions per minute and 583 pound-feet (790 Nm) at 2,400 revolutions per minute. Toyota lists the very same numbers for the Tundra as well. Lower down the spectrum, the non-hybrid V6 offers 389 horsepower and 479 pound-feet (650 Nm). The entry-level specification makes do with 358 hp and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm) of twist.
