Holden’s decision to stop manufacturing in Australia has led Toyota to question whether it can survive as the only automaker in the country.
Starting with 2017, Holden will stop its production in Australia, a decision that will directly cost 2,900 jobs and more thousands indirectly, including local parts suppliers, leaving Toyota to think if it can survive without them.
Toyota officials said that Holden’s decision “will place unprecedented pressure on the local supplier network and our ability to build cars in Australia. We will now work with our suppliers, key stakeholders and the government to determine our next steps and whether we can continue operating as the sole vehicle manufacturer in Australia.”
Labor and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union blamed the government for Holden’s exit, with treasurer Joe Hockey “daring” the automaker to shut its gates.
