Toyota said today in an official statement that it plans to invest $80 million to expand production at its plant in Huntsville, Alabama, where it makes V6 engines for the US market. According to the Japanese automaker, the money will grow toward creating a new wing that will start production in March 2014 and will produce an additional 216,000 V6 engines per year, increasing its capacity by 148 percent to a new total of 362,000 units annually.
Currently, Huntsville produces 700,000 4-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines annually for eight Toyota North American-built cars and trucks. But combined with operations in West Virginia and Kentucky, combined engine output for the US will sit at 1.4 million.
Toyota will have to hire 125 additional workers in Huntsville, increasing the force to 1,150 people.
“This V6 line addition continues to reflect our growing optimism for an improving North American market, and we continue to study more localization in North America,” said Steve ST. Angelo, executive VP of Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing North America.
