After co-developing the excellent GT-86, a very light, nimble and rather efficient car (for what it is), they now have their sights set on an efficient electric sports car.
While no clear details have been given on when the actual car will debut, according to autocar.co.uk, some of the tech that’s going into it has already been previewed on the 2000GT EV.

Also, according to Hiroyuki Ogawa, Toyota’s Advanced Drivetrain Chief, they have “a desire to use a manual gearbox in our electric and hybrid sports cars”, calling the current CVTs “efficient but not fun”. He also confirmed that a manual hybrid is in the pipeline and three years away.

We think that if Toyota does manage to make a proper sporty EV with a manual gearbox, it will finally start to ‘reel in’ those people who do not approve of EVs because they are not fun.

Coupling a manual gearbox to an electric motor may also boost its efficiency, as well as the top speed, as it could be attained at much lower rpm, and therefor not drain the battery as much.
