Toyota Nearly Doubles Sales in February

The month of February ended in a not so happy note for Japanese automaker Toyota, who was forced, once again, to announce a major recall because of the same problem that had caused the storm in 2010: the renegade floor mats.

The effects of the recall will probably not be felt in the sales figures until March is over and the auto maker posts the figures for the month that just started. In February, the auto maker managed to bring back the glory of past days in the US, reporting an increase in sales of about 41.8 percent over the over the same period last year. In all, Toyota sold 141,846 units for the month.

"After two months of improving sales, we feel good about the way 2011 has started," said Bob Carter, Toyota Motor Sales general manager.

"The launch of our 'No1 for a Reason' campaign last week contributed to an especially strong close, with a big increase in customer traffic and improved sales across the car and light truck segments.  We plan to keep the momentum going in March."

The Toyota division, the driving force behind the business, reported it had sold 74,527 units in February, up 50.8 percent over 2010's February. The best selling models in the lineup were the Camry and Camry Hybrid, followed by Corolla and Prius.

Lexus, the auto maker's luxury division, 5,923 units, becoming the single brand in the Toyota line-up to post a decrease for the month: 7.0 percent down. Scion, on the other hand, posted a growth 30.2 percent year-over-year, to a total of 3,944 units.
