Toyota Joins EPA's WasteWise

The American division of Japanese carmaker Toyota announced today it will join the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WasteWise program, the first national waste reduction program aimed at waste prevention, recycling and buying or manufacturing recycled products.

The WasteWise program is a great opportunity to recognize the efforts of Toyota associates that contribute to our waste reduction and recycling efforts every day,” Bob Wade, Toyota corporate manager of environmental, hazardous material and safety said in a release.

Of course, the announcement was a good platform for Toyota to share a bit of what they managed to recycle or reuse in 2008. According to the manufacturer, Toyota managed to recycle 86 percent of the waste in produced in 2008.

That means, according to the EPA, some 24 million pounds of waste have been recycled, equivalent in terms of polluting with the emissions from 10,549 passenger vehicles.

WasteWise's goal is to prevent, minimize and eliminate the amount of recycled material to be recycled or thrown away. Since its inception, in 1994, some 1,100 organizations and companies joined the program, including manufacturers, retailers and service firms from more than 50 different industry sectors.

"The greenhouse gas reduction focus in our industry is primarily on vehicle emissions,”
Wade concluded. “But Toyota works to reduce emissions throughout all aspects of our business. From energy efficiency in our facilities to waste reduction and recycling, our goal is to minimize our environmental footprint.”
