Yeah, we know it’s a childish animation, but it shows some interesting features that might be implemented in future traffic.
It’s clear that the integration of traffic awareness systems into the car is the key to its integration into a fluid, safe and high tech transportation infrastructure. Imagine the traffic like a huge ant colony. You’ve seen ants that can travel on specific routes or simply all around the nest without colliding into each other. That is because they communicate, and each one knows about the others positions and intentions. And if that system can be implemented into our traffic there will be no more queues at traffic lights or accidents.
The clip bellow tries to induce the idea of a self-aware vehicle, as Toyota imagines it, being able to “read” the traffic like a human. Well, just a bit better than a faulty distracted human, as it can detect cars behind a corner, red lights, slow traffic and even approaching traffic at an intersection in order to avoid it and ditch the necessity of stoplights.
All it’s done equipment able to communicate between the vehicles and traffic infrastructure. It seems quite a nice idea, but it’s taking the driving pleasure a bit too much in our opinion, and for such system to work, everybody needs to be part of it. We doubt that this self-aware-driving vehicles will be the next big thing as gearheads and driving addicts will be out there wanting to go odschool.
