Toyota Aurion to Stay

Despite not so encouraging sales and the cannibalism menace of the soon-to-be Camry hybrid, the Australian arm of Japanese carmaker Toyota announced plans to keep producing the Aurion and even plans a new generation for 2012.

"For us, Aurion has been a good strategy. We did all those sorts of analysis and we felt that for our volume aspirations and our market share aspirations, maintaining Aurion V6 was an appropriate decision,” David Buttner, Toyota Australia's sales and marketing director told GoAuto.

Aurion managed to sell 13,910 units in 2009, representing a 29 pwercent drop compared to the previous year. Still, this hasn't deterred the carmaker, as they say numbers are well within reasonable limits.

“We had an objective of achieving a 15 per cent market share, we have achieved that share,” Buttner added. The Aurion still made a valuable contribution when it came to adding volume at Toyota’s Victorian plant. For us it has been a good strategy assisting to maintain strong volumes of locally produced at Altona.”

The Aurion, which has been in production since 2006, sells in Australia and some parts of Asia. It is, in fact, a rebadged and tweaked Toyota Camry and it is even sold as a Camry is some markets.

When it was introduced, Toyota set an annual sales target for it of 24,000 units, nearly double those of the Avalon. It somewhat fell short of that target.
