Toyota Aqua Topping Sales in Japan

After four consecutive years of being Japan’s best-seller vehicle, the Toyota Prius Liftback got dethroned by a... well, another Prius of course.

According to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association, the Toyota Prius c (or the Aqua as they call it here) got to be the country’s top seller for the first time in 2013, being sold in 262,367 units.

The classic Prius came second to its smaller sister, registering sales of 253,711 units in 2013, while most of the top 10 best-selling cars in Japan is made up of keycars.

The Toyota Prius c (Aqua) launched in December 2011 received a minor refresh in December 2013 that made it achieve an increased fuel economy of 37 km/l (up from 35.4 km/l) according to the Japanese JC08 cycle.
