They say children are always truthful, at least in their early years, and this definitely proves it. A 3-year-old girl traveling with her stoned parents handed over the drugs to the trooper who had pulled them over.
A statement from the New York State Police says that troopers pulled the vehicle over last week, on Route 32 in New Scotland. One of them immediately noticed that the ashtray was filled with butts of marijuana cigarettes, so he asked the driver to step outside for questioning.
As the other trooper went in to check on a 3-year-old girl who was not properly restrained in the back carseat, the toddler reached out and handed him a bag full of the drugs the parents probably hid when they saw that the cops were pulling them over.
“The little girl reached under the front seat and retrieved a zippered pouch. She opened it and held it up, so the trooper could see the contents. The pouch contained a bag of marijuana and a metal grinding device and smoking pipe, both containing the drug. The child gave the pouch to the trooper, who secured it as evidence,” the statement says.
Not surprisingly, both driver and the passenger, believed to have been the girl’s parents, were arrested and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and drug possession. The 26-year-old male driver was released under supervision until his court date, while the 33-year-old female passenger was released on her own recognizance.
Meanwhile, the girl was handed over to relatives on a temporary basis and Child Services were notified of the situation, so they can conduct their own investigation, the statement adds. It doesn’t mention the state the girl was in or whether she was placed in any other immediate danger while under the care of the two.
