Of all the cars one could (but shouldn’t) steal, an ambulance should never be at the top of the list. One California woman did it, and what’s more perplexing is that she didn’t have an immediate, obvious reason for it.
The woman, 34-year-old Natasha Scott, is now in custody, potentially facing serious time in jail on a wide array of charges, Fox News reports. The ambulance was reported stolen from St. Joseph's Hospital, but the report doesn’t mention how the driver managed to gain access to it and then drive it off the hospital premises.
Either way, Stockton police spotted the missing ambulance 3 miles from where it had gone missing. They tried to pull the driver away but she fled.
According to the police report, the woman drove the ambulance at speeds in excess of 90mph. She headed north, out of town, but seemed to have a change of mind about 10 miles farther down the road. She made a U-turn, which gave the police time to intercept the vehicle.
They used a spike strip to blow out the vehicle’s tires. The woman was arrested without further incident, after a short but very high speed chase.
“The French Camp, Calif., resident is facing seven charges stemming from the incident, including possession of a stolen vehicle and driving on a suspended license, and also has outstanding warrants for battery and possession of a controlled substance,” the publication says.
Scott is now in custody at San Juaquin County Jail, with bail set at $150,750. She is due in court later this week to be arraigned.
As of the moment, police have not made public a reason for the theft, which is uncommon with incidents of this type. It could be that she didn’t offer them an apparent reason for her decision to suddenly drive off in a hospital ambulance.
