You’ve seen them, we’ve seen them and we all have been mesmerized by their camouflage, trying to figure out what hides underneath. Yes, I’m talking about the prototypes BMW has running on public roads and the Nurburgring months ahead of their official unveiling.
The reason why they hold such a firm grasp of our imagination and take up so much of our time is that they are the only way of seeing how a new car from the manufacturer will look like before it is officially unveiled. And we all know that information is key these days. Therefore, who knows something first has the upper hand.

Well, in case you ever wondered how the process of camouflaging such a car goes down you need to wonder no more. A video showed up on Youtube, allowing us to take a glimpse of how exactly it’s all done.

The car in the video is a prototype for the F07 5 Series Gran Turismo, admittedly not the best looking BMW of all times. That’s irrelevant right now though, as the car that left the garage in the pictures doesn’t look like it should anyway.

What surprised us the most must be the fact that the plastic panels that covered the body of the car were attached to its body with bolts that were simply screwed in the doors, bonnet, fenders and so on. That looked horrifying to us to say the least. Can you imagine doing the same thing to your car?

Well, since this is a test prototype, we guess it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like anyone will ever see the holes made by those screws. Another interesting bit is how the interior is covered up, using caps attached to the actual body if the car. Needless to say, the details of the cabin also need to be covered up, to keep pesky car paparazzi out of reach. Well, it’s all very interesting and efficient, to say the least. The car that leaves that garage looks almost nothing like the production model.
