Boy, Volkswagen used to be a lot cooler. I mean, the 2.0L turbo is great and all that, but what happened to the company that stuck a V6 inside the Golf? They got old and boring, that's what happened.
I remember how you could buy a V6 in the TT, the Golf, and the Audi A3. It made them nose-heavy, but they had such a beautiful sound to make up for it. Slowly but surely, these engines were phased out. The most notable change was when the Golf R went from a 3.2-liter to a tuned turbo with around 250 horsepower.
It seemed like a good idea to the people who couldn't put up with a hatchback that drank 20 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. But some were not so happy. HPA Performance is a Canadian shop that specializes in giving Volkswagens their 6-cylinder glory back.
From the outside, this red devil looks like an unassuming 6th generation Golf R. But, as Matt Farah discovers, it's got a turbocharged 3.6-liter motor making more power than a regular Lamborghini Aventador.
The engine comes from a Passat, but most of the internals have been modified. The drivetrain, meanwhile, is from the old TT RS. HPE found the quattro components and 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox were the only parts strong enough to cope with the torque and still fit the car. There's a long list of other components added here, but the only ones that matter are the tires, wheels, and the suspension.
So how does a 740 horsepower Golf handle? Like a shorter, lighter Nissan GT-R, apparently. Matt says it's surprisingly refined and quiet when in Drive mode, but goes to another level when Sport mode is engaged. We'd like to imagine that the owner of this awesome Golf likes to hunt the streets for Porsche drivers and take their betting money. That sounds like a great way to relieve your stress!
